Natural Ventilation in Our Region
By Eldon Mackay, 5/1/2001
Is it a natural ventilation system or is it a natural disaster? In recent times we have seen a 'new look' in some facilities, mostly dairy barns, that have ventured into natural ventilation concepts. The result has been a mixed reaction from 'cure to curse'! Natural ventilation has the perception of being 'so easy' that many farmers/builders have become their own expert. The reaction on the farm has been that the natural ventilation suppliers do not understand our prairie climate. As a result, what is a worthwhile technology gets a bad name by farmers/builders doing their own thing. When their systems fail, these same farmers/builders then blame the technology in general. In reality it is their own experimenting that has caused the failure. We cannot tell you if the technology will work here. No one has taken the technology and applied it as it should be done. If you are to purchase a natural ventilation system, be sure to hold the supplier of that system responsible.
