Government Officials visit Mackay Test Farm

By , 8/30/2002

SASKATOON,Sk. - July 17, 2002 - Mackay Equipment Sales Ltd. have announced the launch of their new manure handling line, the Patz Manure Solutions System. With recent concerns of environmental effects of livestock
waste, this system is clearly a step in the right direction.

Environmental concerns due to livestock waste have been brought to light by unfortunate occurrences such as the Walkerton, Ontario e-coli situation, the North Battleford cryptosporidium bacterium water situation, as well as odor concerns from urban neighbors to livestock operations. Many urban and rural govenment officials have shown a great deal of interest in the Patz
Manure Solutions System because of its commitment to resolve the odor and disposal problems that are asoociated with manure.

The Patz Manure Solutions System consists of a manure separator, a non-clogging screen, a lagoon aerator, a pulsator pump, and a pulsator. Each of these pieces of equipment take steps to reduce the odor often identified with hog or dairy operations and provides a cost effective solution for manure handling. This system can help to reduce the odors by separating the solids from the liquids in the raw manure, aeratiang the lagoon by injecting oxygen and reducing odor emissions, and applying the aerated waste in a low-flow application. The application delivers large droplets instead of a mist, reducing evaporation and run off and minimizing odor as well.

On July 17, 2002, Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food had a 3 day seminar regarding manure management. Approximately 60 attendants consisting of government officials, farmers, students, and educators viewed the system during this seminar and the response was very positive. Many of the people attending believed the system was very cost effective and simple, as well as easy to understand and operate. Dairy and hog operators may find that as permits for building and expansion become more difficult to obtain, with a manure handling system such as Patz these permits may be easier to receive.

The complete manure system site has been set up at Mackay Equipment's test farm, Aberdeen Livestock Technology & Improvement Corporation. This is a 1300 finishing pig farm where other testing is also being conducted such as nutrient content of the raw manure as well as the separated result.
